Long out of bounds to foreign trekkers, Dolpo lures
adventures with promises of untouched natural splendour,
mystical cultures and rare wildlife. Dolpo, situated
in Nepal's far west, was only recently opened to trekkers.
This is where you find stunning Phoksundo Lake, celebrated
as the Jewel of Dolpo. The people here trace their origins
to Tibet, and their culture is a window of traditions
as practiced on the roof of the world centuries ago.
The delusive leopard is a famous denizen of Dolpo and
the rare cat has acquired the status of a mere legend.
Thus its not only the scenery that attracts trekkers
to Dolpo, its the chance to see a corner of Nepal that
very few visitors will ever experience.
The trek begins at Juphal and follows the trail to
Dunai, the first camp then proceeds to Tarakot, the
way up to Shering Gompa (4400m) which is the highest
point of this trek. Passing through the Saldang and
Shey Gompa Village, we descend to the beautiful Phoksumdo
Lake, which is a part of the Shey Phoksumdo National
Park.
The Trek concludes with our descent to Chepka village
and then to Juphal, from where we fly back to Nepalgunj
then to Kathmandu. This region of more than 3000 sq.
Km, is among the most spectacular and protected area
in Nepal.
